DUI Drivers Beware When Driving Impaired in Arizona

With a crackdown on drunk driving in Arizona over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, 389 Arizona residents found themselves arrested for DUI. This number was a slight increase from last year’s DUI arrests of 361. However, this number is still less than Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day or St. Patrick’s Day weekends this year.

Statistics on DUI Driving in Arizona

With an increase in the number of law enforcement officers to 1,600 during the holiday weekend, Arizona saw the number of citations for traffic violations increase tremendously. There were a total of 8,190 traffic stops from July 3rd to July 5th. Of that number, 354 of those stopped for driving under the influence were deemed sober drivers and 389 were arrested for DUI. The average blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.154, a slight increase from last year’s BAC of 0.146. Other known traffic violations for the holiday weekend included 181 seat belt violations; 74 child restraint citations, which was twice the number from last year; 181 speeding citations; four aggressive driving citations; 1,422 civil speed citations; and 2,512 other citations not related to speeding. Even with the vast number of DUI arrests over the July 4th holiday weekend, this was the lowest number of DUI arrests for holiday weekends in 2014. Cinco de Mayo had the most arrests, with 500 drivers being charged with DUI, followed closely by Memorial Day with 495 DUI arrests, and 413 arrests for DUI over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
