Plea Deal Reduces Jail Time by 45 Years
A 23-year-old woman who was facing a 50-year stint in prison because of drug charges wisely opted to enter a plea bargain, resulting in a five-year sentence.
The Case at a Glance
Police arrested and charged the woman in early March when she and another individual were found sitting in a car holding two bags which contained methamphetamine – one with 12 grams and the other with 4.1 grams. She was charged with possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use for distribution.
Why Plea Deals Are Worth It
We get it: no one wants to admit guilt. But when plea deals can drastically reduce jail time, they are definitely worth pursuing. In the case above, the young woman was able to shave a whopping 45 years from her sentence. As we shared in a previous blog entry, nearly 90% of all criminal cases are settled by plea bargains. Through plea deals, prosecutors are able to save time and resources and defense attorneys are able to save their client a lot of jail time. When properly executed, plea deals can lead to:
- Significant reductions in charges, fines and jail time
- Less anxiety about a maximum sentence being handed down
- The case and sentencing being resolved quickly so that everyone involved can get on with their lives
