You Are In A Car Accident: What To Do Now?

There are millions of car accidents every year, but fortunately, there’s almost vehicle damage only and rarely injuries to the passengers. It’s best to be prepared beforehand if you ever find yourself in an accident. Here are ten things you should after an accident.

  1. Never drive away after an accident, even it’s a minor one.
  2. Prevent further damage by turning on your emergency lights if it’s dark. If your lights don’t work, make sure you have a flashlight on hand.
  3. Call the police right away even for a minor accident. If there are any injuries, call the ambulance as well. A police report is important if you want to file an insurance claim.
  4. When you explain the accident to the police officer, tell them as accurately as possible, without being biased towards yourself. If you are unsure about something, tell that to the police officer as well.
  5. Take pictures of the accident, which should be fairly easy to do because all cell phones are equipped with cameras now. Photograph all vehicle damage and injuries.
  6. Take information of others involved in the accident and give your information as well. Usually, information about the driver’s licence and car insurance are sufficient.
  7. Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible.
  8. Once all the above steps have been taken, visit a hospital to get yourself checked for injuries. A lot of times injuries caused by car accidents don’t surface till a few hours later. Unless you are absolutely sure you haven’t been hurt, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
  9. All information and documentation in regards to the accident should be kept together till the case has resolved.
  10. It’s important to contact your attorney so they can help you protect your rights.
